How to Store Lyophilised Research Peptides in the Lab
Research peptides are supplied as lyophilised (freeze-dried) powders because water speeds up chemical breakdown. Good storage keeps a sample stable so your laboratory results stay reliable.
Temperature
For long-term storage, keep sealed lyophilised peptides at -20°C. For short periods, such as a few weeks, 2-8°C (a laboratory fridge) is generally acceptable. Avoid repeated warming and cooling: if you need to use a vial several times, consider dividing it into smaller portions (aliquots) so the main stock is not repeatedly handled.
Light and moisture
Keep vials sealed and away from direct light. Before opening a vial that has been in cold storage, let it reach room temperature first. This stops condensation forming inside the vial, which can introduce moisture and shorten the sample's life.
Reconstituted solutions
Once a peptide has been dissolved for laboratory use, for example in bacteriostatic water, it becomes less stable. Reconstituted solutions are normally kept at 2-8°C and used within a short period. Freezing reconstituted solutions is possible for some compounds but repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided.
Labelling and records
Label every vial and aliquot with the compound name, batch number, concentration and date. Keep the batch's Certificate of Analysis with your records so results can always be traced back to a specific lot.
Quick checklist
Sealed lyophilised powder: -20°C long-term. Short-term: 2-8°C. Keep dry and dark. Warm to room temperature before opening. Avoid repeated freeze-thaw. Label everything with the batch number.
